Glazed and kiln fired terracotta clay sculptures

Festered is a continuation of a sculpture project addressing the physicality of troubled human emotions. In the face of external events like the worldwide health crisis, socio-political challenges and increasing environmental uncertainty, humans are experiencing increased emotional trouble and concern. This ceramic series of over 30 different fired and glazed terracotta clay pieces externalizes this personal and internal observation, reimagining how such feelings could become creatures of their own, festering in our bodies and minds. The series is presented within the vessel-like windows evoking an internal atmosphere in a warm habitat and nurturing the pieces for them to live and reproduce themselves.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Jimena Montemayor‘s (b.1990, Mexico) work focuses on the tensions in personal experiences, juxtaposing emotions and nostalgia with permanence and temporality, as well as the impact of technology in our communication outlets. Their abstract presence is subconsciously nurtured and manifested in our behavior, decision-making, and energy invested in our feelings. Whether influenced by one’s own education, culture or social environments, they all lead to human reactions, side-effects and consequences. From this process she is keen on exploring a visual translation, using straight and puzzled lines, sharp and irregular angles, as well as amorphous and digital structures contributing to an evolving and responsive dialogue.

Throughout her multi-disciplinary career in the fields of art and design, she aspires to create an intertwined relationship of aesthetics and perspectives which have merged into her personal ways of manipulating content. Her most recent works have taken shape in various materials and dimensions from digital formats to tridimensional pieces. Montemayor currently lives and works between Miami and Mexico City.
