Jack Pierson: The Miami Years is the first exhibition devoted to exploring the city’s transformative impact on Pierson’s life and work. The artist’s initial excursion from New York City to Miami Beach in the winter of 1984 instigated many return visits over the years.
To mark Pierson’s Art Week Miami Beach debut, James Voorhies, Curator-at-Large at The Bass, introduces a conversation, between Jack Pierson, the Massachusetts-born artist, and Klaus Biesenbach, Director of Neue Nationalgalerie and the soon-to-open Berlin Modern, as well as former Chief Curator-at-Large at The Museum of Modern Art in New York and Director MoMA PS1.
Voorhies will open the program with an introductory overview of The Miami Years, a series of annual solo exhibitions he has organized to examine Miami’s impact on a single artist—beginning in 2023 with Nam June Paik, followed in 2024 by Rachel Feinstein, and this year devoted to Jack Pierson—before the conversation between Biesenbach and Pierson.
Klaus Biesenbach is a German American curator and museum director.
Since January 2022 Klaus Biesenbach is the Director of the Neue Nationalgalerie with Berggruen Museum and Scharf–Gerstenberg Collection, as well as the berlin modern under construction in Berlin.
Previously, he had been serving as the director of The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA), from 2018 to 2021. He is also a former Chief Curator at Large at The Museum of Modern Art in New York City and former director of MoMA PS1. Biesenbach is also the founding director of Kunst–Werke Institute for Contemporary Art (KW) in Berlin, and the Berlin Biennale.
