PRINTMAKING WITH RECYCLABLE MATERIALS

PRINTMAKING WITH RECYCLABLE MATERIALS

INSPIRED BY NAM JUNE PAIK

This lesson introduces Nam June Paik and his art practice, focusing on basic printmaking techniques that use readily available recycled materials. For this Earth Day inspired lesson, work together with your community and collect single-use plastics to transform them into works of art!

Explore Nam June Paik’s use of recycled materials in his sculptures Bakelite Robot, Lucy and Internet Dweller and make your own a family of robots through printmaking with recyclables.

This self-guided printmaking activity explains how we can repurpose plastic objects like tops and discarded packaging to make innovative portraits and abstract images. Once you master the first steps, you can layer these prints to make robot portraits, figures and abstract layered compositions.

The lesson includes a materials list, written and video instructions, a vocabulary list, images of the artist’s work and a virtual 360 tour of Nam June Paik: The Miami Years exhibition.
