Workshops @ The Bass

SELECT SATURDAYS
MUSEUM MEMBERS: $15
NON-MEMBERS: $20
FOR AGES 21+

Workshops @ The Bass pair the insight of a working artist with inspiration drawn from the museum’s exhibitions. Each session invites you to see art from a fresh perspective—discovering how ideas and techniques from the works on view can spark your own creativity.

On select Saturday afternoons, a guest artist will lead a focused look at a selected piece or exhibition, then guide you through a hands-on workshop driven by that conversation.

Spend your afternoon exploring, experimenting, and creating—whether with a friend, a family member, or on your own.

Arrive 10 minutes early to enjoy a complimentary glass of wine with the artist before the program begins.

Sculptural Embodiment: Paper Making and Manipulation with Jessica Perez

Sculptural Embodiment: Paper Making and Manipulation begins with a visit to Sarah Crowner’s exhibition Faire Foyer: Sarah Crowner in Dialogue with Etel Adnan, where her reflective bronze sculptures embody movement, gesture, and organic form. Observing how her shapes engage with the space and light, we will draw from that rich visual language of color and biomimicry to create our own paper models.

From there, we move into the paper making workshop led by Jessica Perez. We begin with processing and dying the recycled paper, learning how to prepare for making our own sheets. As we progress, we will learn methods of manipulating the freshly cast paper to add texture and form. The focus is on understanding material needs, and refining manual dexterity to create engaging shapes that challenge our perception of this everyday medium.

Workshops @ The Bass | Pistoletto’s Mirrors: Reflecting Gaze and Breath with Oscar Rieveling and Alivia Murdoch

Pistoletto’s Mirrors: Reflecting Gaze and Breath offers alternate ways of looking inspired by the work of seminal artist Michelangelo Pistoletto and his use of mirrors. Centered upon the installation Michelangelo Pistoletto: Mirror of Eternity, a guided walkthrough will offer workshop participants with a grounding of the artist’s influence across art historical periods, material innovation, and consider the mirror´s use in contemplative practices more broadly.

Following the tour, participants will take part in two meditative exercises: mirror gazing and breath work. Both practices aim to invoke an inward meditation. Whether it be to access subconscious awareness or simply attaining a greater sense of grounding, these techniques can be readily employed as part of creative and wellness practices.

Following the meditations, participants will be able to exchange their reflections gleaned across the two experiences.

Workshops @ The Bass are created for adults ages 21+ at any skill level. All materials are provided.

The class is $15 for museum members and $20 for nonmembers.
