The Bass is Miami Beach’s contemporary art museum. Focusing on exhibitions of international contemporary art, The Bass presents mid-career and established artists reflecting the spirit and international character of Miami Beach. The Bass seeks to expand the interpretation of contemporary art by incorporating disciplines of contemporary culture, such as design, fashion and architecture, into the exhibition program.

We always have many different volunteer and internship opportunities available year round. We may also have full-time salaried positions or part-time staff openings depending on availability and needs. Guest Services Associate

FLSA Code: Part-Time, Non-Exempt

SUMMARY

The Bass, Miami Beach’s contemporary art museum, seeks dynamic, outgoing Guest Services Associates to provide reliable and effective front-line service to the museum. As the “face of the Bass,” Guest Services Associates are responsible for delivering outstanding customer service and being positive representatives of the Bass at all times. Guest Services Associates report directly to the Operations Manager.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Perform general museum reception, greeting the public, special guests, members, and groups in a cheerful, positive manner at all times.
  • Ensure a positive and safe experience for all museum users including exhibition visitors, program participants, café/shop visitors, event attendees and those participating in on- site rentals.
  • Provide and maintain accurate information about the museum, exhibits, programs, and services.
  • Process admissions, program fees, membership fees, and various payments through a Point of Sale system (Altru); balance all intakes at close of business before submitting to Senior Guest Services Associate.
  • Answer all general phone inquiries and/or transfer callers to the appropriate staff member.
  • Capture accurate statistical, marketing and membership data.
  • Assist with administrative tasks as needed:  mail pick up and processing, and purchasing staff supplies, maintaining forms, supply sourcing and ordering, correspondence, and filing.
  • Maintain a clean, business-like front-of- house environment.
  • Assist with other duties as required and assigned by the Operations Manager

ESSENTIAL SKILLS

  • Positive team player with excellent communication, interpersonal skills, and conflict resolution
  • Proficient organizational and time-management skills and strong multi-tasking abilities
  • Strong computer skills required, including proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong mathematical skills, attention to detail and significant use of memory

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE

  • Fluency in Spanish strongly preferred
  • Experience in cash handling with knowledge of Point of Sale systems preferred
  • Museum/Art experience not required, but preference will be given to candidates with an interest in the field

WORK SCHEDULE

  • 20-28 hours per week, with potential for more based on event needs
  • Scheduling TBD, but flexible

The Shop Assistant

Part-Time; Non-exempt

The Bass, Miami Beach’s contemporary art museum, seeks a responsible, dependable highly motivated, and detail-oriented candidate with excellent customer-service skills to join the Operations department’s retail team as The Shop Assistant.

The Shop is the museum’s boutique bookstore and gift shop, offering a curated selection of artist editions, art literature, and artisanal jewelry, accessories and home décor. The Shop is operated by museum staff, and is open during regular museum operating hours and during select special events in the evenings.

The Shop Assistant reports to the Operations Manager and works under the supervision of The Shop Curator.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct opening and closing procedures for The Shop during regular museum hours.
  • Ensure the shop is opened promptly at the designated time. Perform visual checks on stock displays, ensuring everything is properly tagged, organized, and the display is visually appealing, maintaining a welcoming environment for The Shop.
  • Ensure The Shop is properly closed at the end of each day, including tidying up displays and preparing The Shop for the next day of operation.
  • Assist in setting up and dismantling The Shop for special events, ensuring merchandise is properly tagged, organized, and stored. Assist in restoring The Shop at the completion of special events and before the next day of operation.
  • Provide retail support during special events. Ensure the display is visually appealing for special events, maintaining a welcoming environment for The Shop.
  • Provide excellent customer service to visitors during museum hours and special events, assisting them with inquiries, purchases, and providing information about brands, designers, and artists featured in The Shop.
  • Develop and maintain accurate product knowledge. Stay informed about the brands, designers, and artists represented in The Shop, being able to confidently discuss their work and answer customer questions.
  • Conduct and maintain merchandising and inventory of products at The Shop. Tag new merchandise with accurate pricing and descriptions. Assist in maintaining accurate inventory records and restocking shelves as needed.
  • Receive and manage storage for new merchandise shipments, ensuring accurate documentation and safe storage practices, in communication with the Operations Manager and related staff.
  • Maintain cleanliness of The Shop. Keep the gift shop clean and organized throughout the day, including dusting, sweeping, and tidying up displays.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Previous experience in retail or customer service preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail are required.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and customer service skills are required.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team is required.
  • Knowledge or interest in art, design, and/or museum operations, is desirable.
  • Flexibility to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as needed.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be in good physical condition, able to move moderately heavy objects (35lbs.), bend, stoop, walk, climb stairs, stand, and sit for extended periods of time.

Must be able to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends for special events.

WORK SCHEDULE
This is a part-time, non-exempt position. The Shop is open during regular museum operating hours, Wednesday through Sunday, from 12 PM to 6PM.

Ability to work weekend and evening hours for special events as directed by supervisor.

This position is not open to remote work.

COMPENSATION

$16 Hourly (approximately 25 – 30 hours per week)

Internships

The Bass’ intern program is aimed at college juniors, seniors and recent graduates, graduate students and young museum professionals. The program provides an introduction to the inner workings of specific departments and theoretical training in a museum. The Bass encourages applicants from a wide range of disciplines in an effort to realize a well-rounded team for the intern program. Internships at The Bass are unpaid unless otherwise noted.

Docents

Docents are an integral part of the visitor experience at The Bass. Trained by museum education staff as tour guides, docents give interactive tours to individuals as well as visiting groups of children and adults. Docents receive educational tutorials on the exhibitions and attend group outings, as well as gain access to a behind-the-scene look of the museum.
