CURATOR CULTURE | CURATING NAM JUNE PAIK: THE MIAMI YEARS
Internationally recognized as the pioneer in video art, Korean-born, American artist Nam June Paik (1932–2006) is known for early experiments using the emerging technology of video, creating large-scale sculptural installations with television monitors. It is less known that Paik lived for more than a decade between New York City and Miami Beach, where he used the South Florida region as both respite and studio, making in the early 1990s two large-scale video installations for the Miami-Dade International Airport.
Organized in conjunction with the exhibition Nam June Paik: The Miami Years, this conversation between John Hanhardt, art historian, curator of film and media, and authority on Paik, and James Voorhies, Curator of The Bass, will recover and parse this little-known history on Paik—offering new insight into the acclaimed artist’s installations for the airport and his life in Miami Beach where he died in 2006.

AFTER HOURS AT 9 PM AT SWEET LIBERTY. MENTION “THE BASS” FOR 10% OFF.
Free admission with RSVP. Limited seating based on first-come first-served. Members can visit the Member’s Lounge for complimentary wine courtesy of Dry Farm Wines.
Experience Electric Rice Field (2023), a live multimedia performance of electro-synth music and analog glitch video art by MyFi Studio. After spending the summer in Japan, Miami-based MyFi Studio is producing a site-specific performance in celebration of Nam June Paik: The Miami Years, on view at The Bass from October 4, 2023, through August 16, 2024. MyFi will perform an improvisational work featuring field notes, audio samples, and footage from their time around Japan, including Tokyo, Akizuki, and Taketomi Island. The soundscape and visuals will be glitched and synthesized in real time. Imagine a rice field, but the field is not just flooded with water and mud. Electric cables run through its root system. Rows of plants start to emerge, wriggle, and dance. Take a closer look, can you feel it? The 田んぼ (tanbo) rice field and 電気 (denki) electricity. Nature and technology as one entangled network. You might find yourself getting poked by a crab and slimed by a slug.

Third Thursday | MyFi Studio
