Curator Culture

Presenting public conversations with leading voices in contemporary art, the Curator Culture series brings together curators, artists and thought leaders who are shaping our current landscape of art and culture. Upcoming guests will delve into this season’s theme—“Networks”—and its far-reaching connotations, from technology and the media to community, public space, and freedom of assembly. Curator Culture’s programs are moderated by James Voorhies, The Bass Curator.

Generous support for Curator Culture provided by The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

CURATOR CULTURE | CURATING NAM JUNE PAIK: THE MIAMI YEARS

Internationally recognized as the pioneer in video art, Korean-born, American artist Nam June Paik (1932–2006) is known for early experiments using the emerging technology of video, creating large-scale sculptural installations with television monitors. It is less known that Paik lived for more than a decade between New York City and Miami Beach, where he used the South Florida region as both respite and studio, making in the early 1990s two large-scale video installations for the Miami-Dade International Airport.

Organized in conjunction with the exhibition Nam June Paik: The Miami Years, this conversation between John Hanhardt, art historian, curator of film and media, and authority on Paik, and James Voorhies, Curator of The Bass, will recover and parse this little-known history on Paik—offering new insight into the acclaimed artist’s installations for the airport and his life in Miami Beach where he died in 2006.
