TANGRAM PUZZLE

IDEAS DESIGN CHALLENGE
Inspired by Karen Rifas, Deceptive Constructions

Lesson Duration: 45 minutes – 1 hour

MATERIALS

  • Download the printable template
  • Two sheets of cardstock or printer paper to print two copies of this template
  • Scissors
  • Printer

Vocabulary:

Replicate: to repeat or copy something exactly 

Reference: the act of looking at or in something for information


BEFORE YOU BEGIN

DIRECTIONS

Prep
First follow the link listed above to download and print the template required for this activity.If you do not have access to the printer, try to draw a copy of the image for you to cut out.

STEP 1
Carefully, take a look at Karen Rifas’ painting below.

STEP 2
Take one of your printed templates and cut out each of the shapes. Leave the other copy whole and use it for reference.

STEP 3
You are ready to solve the puzzle! Scramble up the shapes to challenge yourself.

STEP 4
Using the original painting as reference, try to piece the shapes together and replicate her painting.

BONUS CHALLENGE: After, use your imagination to create your own! Can you use the shapes to create a figure, animal or landscape?

LEARNING BENEFITS
This activity helps a child’s control of the small muscles of the hand (fine motor skills) and allow children to make the precise movements necessary for forming letters and improve hand eye coordination.

ADAPTATION FOR OLDER ARTISTS
Make your own! Draw a shape, with other lines inside, with more complicated shapes, like a hexagon or octagon..
