ART AFTER HOURS: BOOK CLUB

Octavia E. Butler’s novel, Parable of the Sower, is set amidst the global climate and economic crises of the early-2020s. Originally published in 1993, the speculative nature of Parable of the Sower offers a strikingly accurate view of our world’s current state. We will discuss this novel in conversation with Anne Duk Hee Jordan’s I will always weather with you which explores themes of climate change, technology and humanity’s relationship to the Earth.

Please come prepared to discuss the book and for a brief walkthrough of the exhibition.

Book Club: Continental Drift

Set in the 1980s, Russell Banks’ Continental Drift follows two plots—one of a working-class New Englander moving to Florida in search of riches and the other, of a young Haitian woman emigrating to the United States to flee the strife of her homeland. We will discuss this novel in conversation with We Are in This Together: Selections from the Collection which considers the complex network of our increasingly globalized world.

Miami Noir: The Classics is an anthology composed of classic noir fiction from writers including Marjory Stoneman Douglas, Zora Neale Hurston, Elmore Leonard and more. We will discuss this novel in conversation with Nam June Paik: The Miami Years which explores the work of pioneer video artist, Nam June Paik and his time living in Miami Beach as we think through the city of Miami and its relationship to artists.
