ATHI-PATRA RUGA | The Future White Women of Azania

Athi-Patra Ruga explores the borders between fashion, performance, and contemporary art through a practice that exposes and subverts the body in relation to structure, ideology, and politics. Ruga’s performance The Future White Women of Azania, 2010- present, focuses on identity politics in the form of drag. He employs drag as a method of self-preservation and avatars as a locus of agency, often hiding his performers with their costumes until the multi-media performance incorporates dynamic digital and wearable components. Watch a segment of his performance which took place at the public library adjacent to The Bass.
